Semrush and SE Ranking compete for the same buyer with very different offers. Semrush is the category’s heavyweight. It publishes the largest dataset in the business and wraps more than fifty tools around it, covering SEO, content, PPC, social, local, and AI visibility. Adobe bought the company in April 2026. SE Ranking is the challenger built on a simpler promise: most of the daily SEO workflow, at a fraction of the price, with limits you can predict. It restructured its pricing in late 2025 into two clean plans, Core and Growth.
We reviewed Semrush hands-on and scored it 4.0/5 in our full Semrush review. We have also tested SE Ranking’s core workflows first-hand for its upcoming review. So this comparison rests on real use of both tools, not spec sheets. The question it answers is the one budget-conscious buyers actually ask: what do you give up when you pay less than half the price, and does your work need what you give up?
This comparison follows the same order we use to score single SEO tools. Data quality comes first and gets the most depth. Then we cover features, ease of use, real cost, integrations, support, and a security check on both. By the end, you should know which platform fits your work, your team, and your bill.
The biggest published dataset in the category and competitive intelligence SE Ranking cannot match. The catch: seats, tier gating, and add-ons push the real bill well above the sticker price.
Most of the daily SEO workflow at less than half the cost, with flat limits, a no-card trial, and API access from the entry tier. The catch: a smaller dataset, and no real PPC or market intelligence.
Decision Rule:
Choose Semrush if deep competitive intelligence, or one platform for marketing beyond SEO, is your priority.
Choose SE Ranking if predictable cost, core SEO workflow, and affordable client reporting are your priority.
Choose neither if backlink data accuracy is your top need or you want a dedicated technical crawler. See Ahrefs or Screaming Frog.

Comparison methodology · Hybrid. This comparison draws on first-hand use of both platforms: daily hands-on work in Semrush, and hands-on testing of SE Ranking’s core workflows. Both are corroborated with official documentation and pricing pages, verified on publish day, and recurring user consensus across G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, and Trustpilot. First-person judgments are stated as such.
Core Differences
Philosophy and data strategy
Semrush is built to be everything. Its bet is that a marketing team’s real problem is fragmentation: five subscriptions, five logins, five exports to reconcile. So it assembled the biggest published dataset in the category (over 27.9 billion keywords and 43 trillion backlinks, by its own figures) and wrapped more than fifty tools around it. The Adobe acquisition in April 2026 pushes that positioning further. Semrush now sits as the visibility layer of a much larger marketing stack.
SE Ranking is built to be enough. It does not try to win on index size. Its bet is that most SEO teams use the same core workflow every day: track rankings, audit the site, research keywords and competitors, check backlinks, and send the client a report. So it built that workflow well, priced it low, and made the limits flat and easy to understand. The late-2025 restructure into two plans, Core and Growth, sharpened this pitch. Everything the workflow needs, including Looker Studio, API and MCP access, and AI answer tracking, is in the base plans rather than gated tiers up.
User base and positioning
The buyers look different too. Semrush draws integrated marketing teams: agencies and in-house departments that run SEO next to content, paid search, and social, and want one bill for all of it. SE Ranking draws the cost-conscious core of the industry: freelancers, consultants, and small-to-mid agencies. Its G2 profile tells the story plainly. Around ninety percent of its reviews come from small businesses, and its 4.8 rating from more than 1,400 reviews is among the highest in the category.
Pricing philosophy
Both tools use flat limits rather than credits, but they price very differently. Semrush keeps a competitive entry sticker and monetizes growth. The second seat, the content toolkit, historical data, the API, and add-ons like AI Visibility ($99 per month per domain) each raise the bill. SE Ranking prices the whole workflow into two tiers and keeps add-ons few and cheap. Extra seats cost from $16 per month, against $45 to $100 at Semrush. The one notable SE Ranking add-on is the Agency Pack at $69 per month, which carries white-label reporting and expanded AI tracking.
The trade-off, named
The trade is capability ceiling for cost floor. Pick Semrush and you get the deepest dataset and the widest toolset in the category, and you pay for that ceiling whether you use it or not. Pick SE Ranking and you get a lower, predictable bill and a tool that covers most daily SEO work. You accept a smaller dataset, and a hard stop where PPC research and market intelligence begin. Both choices are defensible. The right one depends on how much of Semrush you would actually use.
Data Quality & Accuracy: Head-to-Head
Data accuracy carries the most weight in our scoring. A tool that reports wrong numbers does more harm than a tool that simply does less. This section is also where honesty requires admitting what nobody knows.
Scale and freshness: the vendor-published facts
Semrush publishes category-leading numbers, and they should be read as vendor claims from its own data pages, not verified counts. It reports over 43 trillion backlinks, 27.9 billion keywords across 142 regional databases, and 808 million domain profiles. Its crawler processes about 10 billion pages a day, and its traffic model draws on a clickstream panel of over 200 million users. SE Ranking publishes far more modest scale claims and does not compete on index size. Its Core plan documentation focuses instead on what you can do daily: 2,000 tracked keywords, unlimited keyword, competitor, and backlink research, and 250,000 audited pages a month. On raw data scale, Semrush wins clearly. But scale is a claim source, not proof of accuracy, and a bigger global index does not guarantee better data for your specific market.
Accuracy against ground truth: what the evidence does and doesn’t say
Here the comparison gets uncomfortable for both tools, in different ways. The strongest independent benchmark in the category is a 2024 study by Collaborator, which tested traffic estimates against Google Search Console data on 184 websites. Semrush was included, and it showed the highest average error of the tools tested, at about 62 percent, with a tendency to overestimate traffic. SE Ranking was not included at all. That means its estimate accuracy is unproven in both directions. No independent study shows it is worse than Semrush, and none shows it is better. In our hands-on testing of SE Ranking’s core workflows, its rank tracking matched our manual checks well, which is consistent with the user consensus that praises its tracking. But rank tracking is the easiest data to verify. Traffic and volume estimates are not, and there we simply have no independent evidence for SE Ranking.
What no number from either tool means
One rule applies to every number in both tools. Search volumes, traffic estimates, and difficulty scores are modeled estimates. Google does not supply them. The branded metrics are not comparable across tools either. Semrush’s Authority Score and SE Ranking’s domain authority metric use different math on different data and do not share a scale, and the same is true of their difficulty scores. Compare how each metric is built and how you will use it. Never compare the raw numbers head to head. Treat everything as directional, especially on small sites, where every tool’s accuracy drops sharply.
Editorial conclusion
For discovery and competitive mapping, Semrush’s dataset is the safer lean. Its breadth and freshness are unmatched at this pairing, and finding keywords, profiling competitors, and spotting gaps are jobs where more data genuinely helps. For absolute numbers, neither tool has earned blind trust. Semrush’s traffic estimates tested furthest from Search Console in the only independent benchmark available, and SE Ranking has never been independently benchmarked at all. The practical habit is the same one we recommend everywhere: use either tool to see the market around you, and use your own Search Console as the ground truth for your site. Whichever platform you choose, run its estimates against your real data for a week before you trust them in a client report.
Key Features & Capabilities
The table below compares the platforms by capability, not by the vendors’ tool names. Watch the Notes column closely. In this pairing, the pattern repeats: Semrush has more, and SE Ranking includes more of what it has in the base price.
| Capability | Semrush | SE Ranking | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyword research | Keyword Magic; 27.9B+ keywords, 142 databases (vendor-published); intent filters; personalized difficulty | Keyword research suite; unlimited research queries; keyword grouping and clustering | Semrush’s database is far larger; SE Ranking’s research is unmetered on both plans |
| Backlink analysis | Backlink Analytics + Audit; 43T links (vendor-published) | Backlink checker and monitoring; unlimited research | Semrush’s index is much larger; neither leads the category on link data (that’s Ahrefs) |
| Rank tracking | Position Tracking; 500/1,500/5,000 keywords by tier; Google, Bing, Baidu; AI-prompt tracking | Rank Tracker; 2,000/5,000 keywords daily by plan; major engines; Google Top 100; Share of Voice | SE Ranking includes 4x more tracked keywords at entry price; rank tracking is its historic core strength |
| Site audit / technical SEO | Site Audit; crawl budgets by plan; AI-readiness checks; On Page SEO Checker | Site Audit; 250k pages/mo (Core) to 2M (Growth); on-page checker; page change monitoring (Growth) | Comparable for most sites; SE Ranking’s page allowances are generous for the price |
| Content tools | Full Content Marketing toolkit, gated to Guru ($249.95) | Content marketing tools included: 25 articles/mo (Core), 50 (Growth) | Semrush’s toolkit is deeper; SE Ranking’s is included at entry price |
| Competitive research | Domain Overview, Organic Research, Keyword Gap, .Trends ($289/mo), AdClarity | Competitor traffic research; AI competitive research | Semrush’s biggest lead; its market intelligence has no SE Ranking equivalent |
| PPC research | Advertising toolkit; ad history to 2012 | Basic competitor PPC view only | Not close; PPC teams need Semrush |
| AI visibility tracking | AI Visibility toolkit; 5+ engines; $99/mo per domain add-on | 100 prompts/day included (Core), 250 (Growth); 5 LLMs; Agency Pack expands with AI Results Tracker + SE Visible | SE Ranking includes meaningful AI tracking in base plans; Semrush charges per domain |
| Local SEO | Local toolkit; per-location add-on | Local marketing included: 3 locations, 1,500 local keywords, 100+ directories; extra locations from $18.40 | SE Ranking includes local basics; Semrush’s toolkit is deeper but fully add-on priced |
| Social media | Social toolkit included | Via Planable (separate product, bundle discount) | Semrush ahead in-platform |
| Reporting / white-label | My Reports; white-label on Business ($499.95) | Report Builder: 10-30 reports; white-label via Agency Pack (+$69/mo) | White-label costs $69/mo extra at SE Ranking vs a $499.95 tier at Semrush |
| Historical data | None on Pro; Guru and above | 6 months (Core); all-time (Growth) | Both gate history, at very different prices |
| API and MCP | API on Business only ($499.95) | 25K API credits + MCP on Core ($103.20); 100K on Growth; API add-on from $45/mo | The starkest gating contrast in this comparison |
| Free evaluation path | Free trial (payment method required); limited free account | 14-day fully functional trial, no card required | SE Ranking is the easiest tool in the category to test risk-free |
Where the toolsets genuinely diverge
Market and PPC intelligence. This is Semrush’s clearest win, and it is not close. .Trends, AdClarity, and the Advertising toolkit give a team visibility into competitor traffic, ad spend, and creative history that SE Ranking simply does not offer. If your work includes paid search research, market sizing, or pitching against competitors’ full digital footprint, SE Ranking is not a candidate. The honest caveat is cost. .Trends alone costs $289 per month, more than two full SE Ranking Core subscriptions.
The included-versus-gated pattern. Run down the feature list and the same shape appears again and again. Content tools: gated to Guru at Semrush, included at SE Ranking’s Core. Looker Studio: Guru at Semrush, Core at SE Ranking. API and MCP access: Business at $499.95 at Semrush, Core at $103.20 at SE Ranking. AI answer tracking: $99 per month per domain at Semrush, 100 daily prompts included at SE Ranking. White-label reporting: a $499.95 tier at Semrush, a $69 add-on at SE Ranking. In our daily Semrush work, the moments of friction are almost never about missing features. They are about features sitting one tier above the plan we are on. SE Ranking has built its whole pitch around removing that feeling.
AI visibility. Both platforms now track AI answers, and the pricing logic differs sharply. Semrush’s AI Visibility toolkit is deep and covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, SearchGPT, and Google’s AI surfaces, at $99 per month per domain. SE Ranking builds AI tracking into its base plans instead. Core includes 100 daily prompts across five LLMs and unlimited AI source tracking, and the Agency Pack and SE Visible dashboard expand it. For a team tracking one brand seriously, Semrush’s depth may justify the fee. For an agency wanting AI visibility signals across many client domains, SE Ranking’s included allowance is the more workable model.
Ease of Use & Onboarding
This is the pairing’s most lopsided dimension, and the user consensus is loud about it. Semrush draws the most consistent learning-curve complaints in the category. Its dashboard packs more than fifty tools, beginners describe it as overwhelming, and many say it took weeks to feel at home. SE Ranking draws the opposite consensus. Its 4.8 G2 rating rests heavily on reviews praising an intuitive interface, easy navigation, and a smooth onboarding wizard. Our hands-on testing matched that consensus. SE Ranking’s core workflows are learnable in an afternoon, and its interface stays out of the way.
The gap has a fair explanation. SE Ranking is easier partly because it does less. A fifty-tool platform cannot be as simple as a focused one, and experienced Semrush users report the density pays off once learned. There is also no usage anxiety on either side of this pairing. Both tools use flat limits rather than credits, so neither imposes the rationing tax that metered tools do.
Both vendors back their products with real education. Semrush Academy and its certifications are among the best-known in the industry. SE Ranking runs its own Academy, help center, and webinars, and its live chat support is unusually accessible for the category. The practical read: a mixed marketing team will eventually get more surface area out of Semrush, but a small team or a solo SEO will be productive in SE Ranking dramatically faster.
Pricing & Value
Headline pricing, verified on the vendors’ pricing pages
One structural note first. SE Ranking retired its old Essential, Pro, and Business plans in late 2025. Many third-party articles still show the old tiers. The current structure, verified on SE Ranking’s own pricing page for this comparison, is two self-serve plans plus Enterprise.
| Tier | Semrush (monthly / annual-equivalent) | SE Ranking (monthly / annual-equivalent) |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Pro, $139.95 / ~$117.33 | Core, $129 / $103.20 |
| Mid | Guru, $249.95 / ~$208.33 | Growth, $279 / $223.20 |
| Top self-serve | Business, $499.95 / ~$416.66 | (none; Growth is the top self-serve plan) |
| Enterprise | Custom via sales; Semrush One bundle $199 / $299 / $549 | Custom via sales |
Billing notes: both vendors discount annual billing by about 20 percent, and SE Ranking bills annual plans upfront. Semrush has no self-serve cancel button, and cancellation friction is a documented complaint pattern. SE Ranking lets you cancel anytime, though payments are non-refundable except where the service wasn’t delivered as promised.
The limits table, the real pricing page
The entry stickers sit close together: $117.33 against $103.20. The limits behind them do not.
| Limit | Semrush Pro ($117.33) | Semrush Guru ($208.33) | SE Ranking Core ($103.20) | SE Ranking Growth ($223.20) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Projects | 5 | 15 | 10 | 30 |
| Tracked keywords | 500 | 1,500 | 2,000 daily | 5,000 daily |
| Historical data | None | Included | 6 months | All time |
| Content tools | Not included | Full toolkit | 25 articles/mo | 50 articles/mo |
| Looker Studio | No | Included | Included | Included |
| API access | No | No (Business only) | 25K credits + MCP | 100K credits + MCP |
| AI answer tracking | $99/mo per domain add-on | $99/mo per domain add-on | 100 prompts/day included | 250 prompts/day included |
| White-label reporting | No | No (Business only) | Agency Pack +$69/mo | Agency Pack +$69/mo |
| Included seats / extra seat | 1 / +$45/mo | 1 / +$80/mo | 1 / from +$16/mo | 3 / from +$16/mo |
| Site audit allowance | Tier crawl budget | Larger tier budget | 250k pages/mo | 2M pages/mo |
What each pricing model punishes and rewards
Neither tool meters research with credits, so the real difference is where growth costs money. Semrush charges for growing sideways. More teammates, more content work, more history, more reporting polish, and each need lands on a higher tier or an add-on. A solo SEO who stays inside Pro’s limits gets fair value. A growing team watches the bill climb. SE Ranking charges very little for growing sideways. Three seats come included on Growth, extra seats start at $16, and the workflow features are already in the base plans. Where SE Ranking says no is at the edges of its scope. There is no amount of money you can pay it for real PPC research or market intelligence, because the tools do not exist there.
The tier-gating audit: what’s the genuinely usable tier?
For Semrush, the answer from our single review holds. A content-led team needs Guru at $208.33 annual to get the content toolkit, history, and Looker Studio. Any team needing the API must buy Business at $416.66 annual. For SE Ranking, the honest answer is unusual for this category: the entry plan is genuinely usable. Core at $103.20 includes the tracker, audits, unmetered research, content tools, Looker Studio, AI tracking, and API access with MCP. The realistic upgrade triggers are capacity, not capability. You move to Growth for more than 10 projects, more seats, or all-time historical data, and an agency adds the $69 Agency Pack for white-label reports. That puts a fully equipped small agency at roughly $172 to $292 per month, against $208 to $417 at Semrush for a setup that still lacks API access until the top tier.
True cost by persona
The Pricing Scenarios section below runs four scenarios in detail. The short version: SE Ranking wins every scenario on price, usually by 40 to 60 percent. The freelancer saves modestly. The agency saves thousands. The only persona where Semrush’s higher cost clearly buys required capability is the team that genuinely uses content, PPC, and market intelligence together.
Trial, refund, and exit friction
SE Ranking is the easiest tool in this category to try and one of the easier ones to leave. Its 14-day trial is fully functional and needs no card. It offers built-in import of projects and keyword ranking history, plus free assisted migration on annual plans, which softens the usual switching pain in one direction: moving into SE Ranking. Cancellation is self-serve, though payments are non-refundable except where the service wasn’t delivered as promised. Semrush’s trial requires a payment method, there is no self-serve cancel button, and its consumer record carries a very low Trustpilot score with recurring refund and cancellation complaints. SE Ranking’s Trustpilot profile is the mirror image, sitting around 4.3 to 4.5 with customers praising support and value. The contrast in commercial friction between these two vendors is the widest we have seen in this category.
One caution for switchers in either direction: proprietary metrics still do not translate. Authority Score has no SE Ranking equivalent, and vice versa, so stakeholder reports re-baseline whichever way you move. And moving from SE Ranking to Semrush, your rank history does not migrate.
The verdict on value
On value, this is not a close call. SE Ranking delivers most of the daily SEO workflow at half the price or less, includes what Semrush gates, and undercuts it on seats, white-label, API, and AI tracking. Semrush earns its premium only where its unique capabilities are actually in the job description: market intelligence, PPC research, deep content tooling, and cross-team marketing breadth. Pay for the ceiling if you will use the ceiling. If you will not, you are subsidizing tools you never open.
Integrations & API
Both platforms connect to the core SEO stack: Search Console, Google Analytics, and Looker Studio. The differences are in gating and reach. SE Ranking includes its Looker Studio, GA4, GSC, and Matomo integrations on the Core plan. Unusually for this category, it also ships API access with MCP support from the entry tier: 25,000 research credits on Core and 100,000 on Growth. Heavier users can add a $45 per month API pack or a standalone data API. Semrush gates Looker Studio to Guru and reserves its API for the Business tier at $416.66 annual. In exchange, Semrush’s integration surface is far wider: native GA4 and Google Business Profile management plus an App Center ecosystem that SE Ranking has no answer to.
The practical read: a team that wants programmatic access, custom dashboards, or AI-agent workflows gets there for $103.20 on SE Ranking and $416.66 on Semrush. A team that wants the widest menu of third-party connections gets it from Semrush.
Customer Support & Community
Support is one of SE Ranking’s genuine differentiators. Live chat is accessible from every page, responses draw consistent praise across G2, Trustpilot, and TrustRadius, and Growth-plan customers get dedicated support. Its Academy, help center, and webinars cover the ramp well. The consensus is not spotless. A minority of reviews cite slow responses and affiliate payout disputes, and we note them for fairness. Semrush’s education is stronger, with the category’s best-known Academy and certifications, but its direct human support draws recurring complaints: slow or unhelpful replies, undisclosed AI-written emails, and support access that varies by tier. One fairness note, as always: billing and refund complaints are commercial friction, not support quality, and we cover them in Pricing & Value where they belong.
Security & Trust
Semrush passes ZoneVerified’s security gate on a well-documented posture: TLS 1.2+ encryption, role-based access, monitored logging, a secure development lifecycle, and GDPR adherence with a DPA. We could not confirm a Semrush-held SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certificate on its public trust pages. Adobe ownership may strengthen the formal picture. SE Ranking’s security review is part of our upcoming single review, and this comparison will mirror its conclusion; any open questions will be flagged there rather than assumed away.
Head-to-Head Trade-Offs
Capability ceiling vs. cost floor
This is the defining trade. Semrush’s ceiling is the highest in the category. Whatever your marketing team grows into, from PPC research to market intelligence to social publishing, the platform already has a tool waiting. SE Ranking’s floor is the lowest serious price in the category for a complete daily SEO workflow. The two designs exist for different customers. Semrush is built for the team whose needs will expand sideways across marketing. SE Ranking is built for the team whose needs will deepen inside SEO. Ask which direction your next year actually points. If you cannot name the Semrush tool you would adopt next quarter, you are probably paying for ceiling you will not touch.
Dataset depth vs. dataset sufficiency
Semrush’s index dwarfs SE Ranking’s, and for some jobs that matters. Long-tail keyword discovery in competitive niches, international research across many markets, and competitor mapping all get better with more data. But for the core loop of tracking rankings, auditing a site, and researching a working keyword set, SE Ranking’s data is sufficient, and its rank tracking in particular held up well in our hands-on testing. The honest complication cuts both ways: Semrush’s bigger dataset did not stop its traffic estimates testing furthest from Search Console in the only independent benchmark, and SE Ranking has never been independently benchmarked. Depth is real. Just do not confuse it with proven accuracy.
One platform for marketing vs. one tool for SEO
Semrush consolidates. A team running SEO, content, paid, and social can genuinely live in it and cancel other subscriptions, which is the fair way to judge its price. SE Ranking focuses. It assumes SEO is the job and everything else lives elsewhere. A five-person marketing department gets more from Semrush than the sum of its parts. A three-person SEO agency gets everything it needs from SE Ranking and keeps the difference as margin.
Growth pricing: seats and gates vs. flat and included
Watch what happens when a team grows on each platform. On Semrush, seat two costs $45 to $100 per month, the content toolkit waits at Guru, and the API waits at Business. On SE Ranking, Growth includes three seats, extra seats start at $16, and the toolkit was included from day one. Over a year, an identical three-person agency can pay two to three times more on Semrush for the overlapping capabilities. That multiple is the price of Semrush’s extras. Whether it is worth paying depends entirely on whether the extras are in your service list.
Lock-in gravity: a note for switchers
The usual switching costs apply here, with one twist. Proprietary metrics do not translate in either direction, and team habits are a real cost. But SE Ranking actively lowers the wall for incoming switchers: built-in import of projects and keyword ranking history, and free assisted migration on annual plans. Moving from Semrush to SE Ranking is about as painless as a platform switch gets in this category. Moving back is not, since your SE Ranking rank history will not follow you into Semrush. If you are torn, the trial asymmetry is your friend: run SE Ranking’s free 14-day trial alongside your current Semrush subscription and compare them on your own projects before deciding anything.
Semrush: Best For
Semrush is the right choice when your work is wider than SEO or deeper than SE Ranking can go. That covers the integrated agency selling SEO next to content, paid search, and social, which consolidates several subscriptions into one login. It covers the in-house marketing department where a content lead, a PPC manager, and an SEO share the platform daily. And it covers the competitive-research specialist whose deliverables lean on market intelligence, traffic analytics, and ad history that SE Ranking simply does not have. It rewards buyers who will use the Guru tier fully, and teams with the budget to add what they need. The honest condition: Semrush’s value depends on its breadth actually being used, its real bill grows through seats, tiers, and add-ons, and its cancellation experience carries documented friction. Go in with the full cost mapped and the exit terms read.
SE Ranking: Best For
SE Ranking is the right choice when SEO is the job and the budget matters. That covers the freelancer or consultant running client work who gets tracking, audits, research, content tools, reporting, and even API access for $103.20 a month. It covers the small-to-mid agency, which gets 30 projects, three seats, all-time history, and white-label reports for less than half of what the equivalent Semrush setup costs. And it covers the in-house SEO at a smaller company who needs a complete, predictable toolkit without procurement drama, plus the easiest risk-free trial in the category to prove it with. The honest condition: SE Ranking’s dataset is smaller, its accuracy has never been independently benchmarked, and its scope ends where PPC research and market intelligence begin. Buy it for what it is, a focused SEO platform, not a discount Semrush.
Look Elsewhere If
Skip both tools if your real need points elsewhere. If backlink data quality is your top priority, neither of these platforms leads the category. See our Ahrefs review: its index freshness and independent accuracy benchmarking make it the link-data leader, at a higher usable price. If your need is deep technical crawling of large sites, neither suite replaces a dedicated crawler; see our Screaming Frog SEO Spider review, which pairs well with either platform. If you want a second, independent backlink dataset for cross-checks, Majestic remains the specialist. And if you are newer to SEO and value approachability with respected metrics and education, Moz Pro remains a fair first platform. These are the same alternatives named in our single reviews, for the same reasons.
Every ZoneVerified SEO tool comparison is analyzed against the same six dimensions used to score our individual SEO reviews, in the same order of priority, with security evaluated separately for both tools. We examine data quality first and most deeply because a tool that reports inaccurate numbers is more damaging than one that simply offers fewer features.

Pricing Scenarios
Here are four scenarios priced from each vendor’s published annual rates plus seats and add-ons, verified for this comparison. These are planning figures, not quotes. Re-check the pricing pages before you buy.
| Scenario | Semrush real cost/yr | SE Ranking real cost/yr | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer, 5 client projects, solo | ~$1,408 (Pro annual) | ~$1,238 (Core annual) | Close on sticker, far apart on contents: Core includes content tools, Looker Studio, AI tracking, and API access; Pro includes none of them |
| Agency, 25 projects, 3 seats, white-label reporting | ~$7,400 (Business annual ~$5,000 + 2 seats × $100/mo) | ~$3,506 (Growth annual $2,678 + Agency Pack $69/mo) | Growth includes 30 projects and 3 seats; white-label and API force Semrush to Business. SE Ranking costs less than half |
| In-house team, 1 property, heavy daily research | ~$2,500 (Guru annual) | ~$1,238 (Core annual) | Both offer unmetered research at these tiers; Semrush’s premium buys its deeper toolkit and dataset |
| Content-led small team, 2 seats | ~$3,460 (Guru annual $2,500 + 1 seat × $80/mo) | ~$1,430 (Core annual $1,238 + 1 seat × $16/mo) | Semrush’s content toolkit is deeper; SE Ranking’s included articles cover most small-team content ops at 41% of the cost |
Two add-on reminders change these totals. Semrush’s AI Visibility toolkit costs $99 per month per domain and .Trends costs $289 per month. SE Ranking’s AI tracking allowances are included in base plans, with the $69 Agency Pack expanding them. No scenario above includes Semrush AI Visibility unless noted.
Final Verdict
The core difference is easy to state. Semrush sells the highest ceiling in the category. SE Ranking sells the best floor. Semrush is our Editor’s Choice because on the dimensions we weight most, data scale and capability depth, it has no equal in this pairing, and for integrated marketing teams it replaces several tools at once. But this is the rare comparison where the alternative wins most of the practical scenarios. For freelancers, small agencies, and SEO-focused teams, SE Ranking delivers the complete daily workflow at half the cost or less. It adds better usability, better support consensus, a friendlier trial, and API access from the entry tier. If that describes you, choose it without hesitation and do not look back.
If you are deciding, the test costs you nothing. Run SE Ranking’s 14-day trial, no card required, alongside whatever you use now. Load your real projects, run both tools’ estimates against your own Search Console data for a week, and let your team work in each. Then ask one question: which Semrush-only tools would we actually open next quarter? If you can name them, buy Semrush and use all of it. If you cannot, SE Ranking just saved you half your tool budget.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is SE Ranking as accurate as Semrush?
Nobody can say with independent evidence. The strongest ground-truth study in the category did not include SE Ranking, and Semrush’s own traffic estimates showed the highest average error of the tools it did test. Treat both tools’ volumes and traffic figures as modeled estimates and check them against your own Search Console data.
Is SE Ranking cheaper than Semrush?
Yes, and by a wide margin at realistic usage. SE Ranking’s Core plan costs $103.20 per month on annual billing and includes Looker Studio, API and MCP access, and AI answer tracking. Getting the same capabilities on Semrush requires the Guru or Business tiers at two to four times the cost. See the persona scenarios above.
Is Semrush or SE Ranking better for agencies?
AccordioIt depends on what the agency sells. Agencies that need white-label client reporting at a predictable cost often fit SE Ranking, whose Growth plan plus Agency Pack costs far less than Semrush Business. Agencies selling integrated SEO, content, PPC, and market intelligence fit Semrush, which SE Ranking cannot match on breadth.n Content
Can I switch from Semrush to SE Ranking without losing my data?
Partly, and this is unusual for the category. SE Ranking offers built-in import of projects and keyword ranking history, plus free assisted migration on annual plans. Proprietary metrics like Authority Score still have no equivalent, so those re-baseline either way. Moving in the other direction, from SE Ranking to Semrush, your rank history does not migrate.
Does Semrush or SE Ranking have a free trial?
Accordion Both do, but they differ. SE Ranking offers a fully functional 14-day trial with no credit card required. Semrush’s trial requires a payment method, and cancellation complaints are a documented pattern. SE Ranking is the easier tool to test risk-free.Content
Can SE Ranking fully replace Semrush?
For core SEO work, usually yes: rank tracking, audits, keyword and backlink research, content tools, and client reporting are all covered. It cannot replace Semrush’s PPC research, market intelligence, and social tools, and its dataset is smaller. Teams that use Semrush mainly for SEO can switch and save. Teams using the wider suite cannot.
